You can't control the weather but....

You cant control the weather, but you CAN control your reaction to the weather.

Picture this...your day at the beach starts as a beautiful bright sunny day, and then all of a sudden you start to see the clouds roll in and then the sky opens up. Beach day + downpour does not equal happiness, true?  Your initial reaction of course is to scramble and protect your precious things from getting wet (hide that cell phone!), but what happens then?  Do you curse the weather because how dare mother nature decide to let it rain on your beach parade! You may say your day is completely ruined because of the downpour.  Feelings of anger and disappointment all of a sudden roll in just as quickly as those clouds rolled in.

But here is the difference between the clouds rolling in and your emotions rolling in...

No matter what there is no way in the world you have control on the weather, however you certainly have 100 percent control of your emotional reaction.  The clouds wont disappear if you ask them or if you will them too, but those feelings of irritation and agitation can be escorted away if you choose.  Meditation teaches us that feelings arise as we sit, however we accept and acknowledge that feeling is there without getting latched onto it.  This is called non-attachment.  By practicing non-attachment we avoid getting dragged along in our own drama and instead choose to detach from the drama.

Just like how the sun is always shining behind the physical clouds and storms, our inner light is always shining behind the emotional clouds and storms that arise in our forecast.  It is true that we may not be able to control mother nature, but it is also true that we have control over our actions and reactions.
